On March 21, 1960, a line of 150 white policemen fired 1344 rounds into a crowd of several thousand people assembled outside a police station, protesting against the Apartheid regime's racist "pass" laws. The gunfire left in its wake sixty-seven dead and one hundred and eighty six wounded. Most of the people who were killed were shot in the back, hit while running away.
The Sharpeville Massacre, as the event has become known, marked the start of armed resistance in South Africa, and prompted worldwide condemnation of South Africa's Apartheid policies. In Sharpeville, Tom Lodge explains how and why the Massacre occurred, looking at the social and political background to the events of March 1960 as well as the long-term consequences of the shootings. Lodge's study of the Sharpeville massacre is a meticulous but overstuffed history of the 1960 clash between black protestors and white policemen in the South African township of Sharpeville, which left 67 protestors dead and nearly 200 wounded, most shot in the back while running away. Lodge (Mandela) offers a detailed account of the causes and consequences of the massacre, credited for drawing global condemnation of apartheid, but his book also presents an expansive history of the South African liberation movement. Drawing on the papers of Robert Sobukwe, the first president of the Pan Africanist Congress, whose nonviolent protest preceded the Sharpeville massacre, Lodge creates a nuanced portrait of the less well-known revolutionary group within the context of more familiar players like the African National Congress, the international antiapartheid movement, and the South African state. The book is especially compelling when it focuses on the local history and politics of Sharpeville, and overall, Lodge's research strikes an impressive balance between documenting the historical facts of the clash and tracing the narratives and political momentum that ramified in its wake. The Story of the Sharpeville Massacre & It's Impact on South Africa

Prior to reading this book, I watched the multi-part documentary "Have You Heard From Johannesburg." The 1st part talked a bit about the Sharpeville Massacre. This book goes into great detail on what led to the protest which led to that massacre, namely Black South Africans opposing the "Pass laws", which require them to have a what amounts to a passport wherever they go outside of their compounds or designated areas. Although not really talked about here, these laws also affected Indians who would later play a big role in the anti-apartheid movement.
The details from those who either witness or survived the massacre are chilling to say the least. Besides accounts from what happened in Sharpeville, there's also a mini-history on the African National Congress, or ANC, the largest political opposition group to Apartheid South Africa before it was banned & want underground & aboard to slowly built up the anti-apartheid movement which came to full circle in the 1980s. The date of the Sharpeville Massacre (March 21) is now a national holiday in South Africa & there's a memorial at the spot where the incident told place, although the mental affects of what happened more than 50 years is still present in the city. Nonetheless, if you want to know more about that fateful day & the impact it had on the country, this is something to check out.

The same struggles our nation's minorities went through is the account of this massacre by the Apartheid regime. An interesting reading that makes you think about the same injustices happen in other continents!

Disappointing academic paper needed editing

The book started promisingly with a rivetting first chapter but it became more tedious as it progressed. Particularly annoying was the number of typos and spelling errors, perhaps forgiveable in an honours essay but not in a work from a well known academic. Was there some rush to publish that impelled a few cut corners? Not only typos but names simply spelt wrongly. Just one example of many: the Prime Minister of Sweden was Olaf Palme,not Palmer. In order to satisfy his hypothesis, being the long term impact of the Sharepeville massacre, the author indulged in considerable speculation; I lost count of the number of times he used the word "may". In his favour he gives equal time to both sides and doesn't seek to paint the demonstrators or their supporters as total victims and the police as pure villains. He readily points out and criticises the whitewashing by some writers, chief among them Bishop Ambrose Reeves, who weaken their argument by egregious bias. All in all, a 5 out of 10.
