About the Author

Dorothy Kauffman, (Ph.D.), author of The Oxford Picture Dictionary for the Content Areas, is a consultant with the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) in Washington, DC. Through CAL, she advocates for instruction that integrates the teaching of language and content and conducts professional development workshops at both the elementary and secondary levels. A former classroom teacher, she has served as a K-8 reading consultant and taught speech, reading, and English composition courses at the community college level. At the university level, she has taught reading methods, language arts methods, childrens literature, and supervised student teachers. The author of a supplementary reading series for grades 1-6 and a set of content-based ESL literature units for grades K-1, she helped to develop a social studies curriculum and textbooks for primary grade students of Belize. She also wrote a series of English language arts workbooks for students in grades K-5. Most recently, she revised the first edition of a staff development program, Whats Different about Teaching Reading to Students Learning English?

Perfect for school-aged children

I like this book because it is specfically made for school aged children. I am currently tutoring 11 and 13 year old boys, and I was previously using the more detailed Oxford Picture Dictionaries with them, but found this book today at my library. This is the only ESL picture dictionary I have found that specifically focuses on school subject matter. It contains illustrations of school aged children. However, I would like to see verbs commonly used, i.e, read, write, study, add, subtract, etc.

Great music; unusual print size

The anthems contained in this collection are particularly lovely. It is a nice assortment for a church choir. It contains some favorite hymns set to different tunes such as "Come Thou Long Expected Jesus", "The Strife is O'er" and "Let All The World". The anthems are indexed in three ways: alphabetically, by composer, and also under suitable occasions such as Advent and Trinity, facilitating the selection of an anthem for a certain time of year in the church calendar. Take note that the book is small in size - about 6" X 8". This makes the reading smaller, but also could have its advantages.

A Precursor of the "New Western History"

When I was in graduate school in the latter 1970s the "new western history" was just emerging as the dominant school of thought about the history of the American frontier. Historians overturned Frederick Jackson Turner's "Frontier Thesis" with its exceptionalist expression of American character and its emphasis on British civilization, finding it both ill-equipped to explain the western experience and incomplete in its treatment of non-English peoples on the hinterlands of the United States. Instead of the positive metaphor for American uniqueness, many criticized the frontier experience as representative of some of the worst attributes of the United States. The "new western history" was dominated by what one wit called the "gang of four"--Patricia Nelson Limerick, Richard White, William Cronon, and Donald Wooster--whose work embodied many of the most interesting and unique elements of this new approach to western studies. I can remember Patty Limerick telling an audience at the Western History Association that the "gang of four" was more like a gang of 400, since she and her colleagues were simply part of a much larger reinterpretation of western history.

She was right, and such works as this one by Richard Bartlett helped pave the way for a fundamental reinterpretation of western America. "The New Country" presents a synthesis of many of the themes of this "new western history." Bartlett offers "a poignant story of people elevating themselves to new affluence and dignity in a new country, in a new civilization of their own making" (p. vi). He rescues from obscurity the myriad peoples, races, and cultures that intermingled on the Trans-Mississippi west of the United States. In so doing, he emphasizes the stories of women and children, religious groups, African Americans, various ethnic groups, the Native Americans of the frontier, and others. At the same time Bartlett anticipates the broader reinterpretation of the American West that Limerick, White, Cronon, and Wooster spearheaded. "The New Country" is a stimulating discussion of the larger history of America's westward movement. It is a very fine analysis of the social history of what was a relatively unsocial part of the United States.

Brings the American Frontier to Life

It is so hard to bring history together to give you a feel of what is going on at a certain point in time. Bartlett bites off a hudge chunk (1776 - 1890) and does a better job than I could imagine of making you feel what the people of that time were experiencing.

This little paperback has been a standard of choral directors and voice teachers since it was published in 1933. Thankfully, it is still widely available through music dealers at $5.95. It teaches sight reading in a methodical method using easily sung 8 -16 measure folk style melodies. About the Author
Paul Tillich (1886-1965), a renowned theologian, taught at several universities in Germany before moving to the United States. In the United States, he taught at Union Theological Seminary in New York, Harvard Divinity School, and the University of Chicago. He is best known for his major three-volume work, "Systematic Theology".

Interesting and exciting blend of philosophy and theology

Calvin O. Schrag (emeritus, Purdue University), while a graduate student at Harvard in the 1950s, was Paul Tillich's assistant. He humorously observed that Tillich was considered by some narrow-minded academics to be a "thinker, not a philosopher." _Love, Power, and Justice_, now celebrating its 50th birthday from original publication, is a short volume that integrates Tillich's passions in philosophy, especially existential thought, and Christian theology. The result is in an exciting synthesis of strands of 20th century thought.
I had long desired to do a careful read of this text, so I assigned it to my Ethics class. We went through it, chapter by chapter, and discussed the relevance of each of the volume's three major concepts to our core course concepts: philosophy, critical thinking, freedom, responsibility, and political justice. I believe that the text served its purpose quite well, and would use it again in a course. Teaching it gave me a deeper insight into the mind of Tillich as well as the important ethical concepts of love, power, and justice.

Tillich Weighs in on Love

This preeminent 20th century Christian theologian argues in this small book that love, power and justice all imply an ontology and must be understood in aspects of being itself. It is in this book that he famously defines love as "the drive toward the unity of the separated" (25). He also refers to love as the moving power of life and believes all love includes qualities of eros and agape.
Tillich does not believe that one can speak of self-love in anything more than a metaphorical sense. After all, if love is the drive toward the reunion of the separated, it is difficult to speak meaningfully of self-love.
In his exposition of the nature of power Tillich notes that love is the foundation, not the negation, of power. Love is the ultimate principle of justice, although justice preserves what love unites. "The basic assertion about the relation of God to love, power and justice is made, if one says that God is Being-itself" (109). However, everything that one says about Being-itself, must be said symbolically.

This book changed my life and my thinking

I came across this book while searching for an answer to the question of how--if power comes from God--it can so often be used to destroy works of love and justice. Tillich shows that when power is separated from its ontological oneness with love and justice, it's another example of our alienation from God--of our free will at work in the worst way.

"Ontological" means "the study of being." Tillich says love, power and justice are united in the structure of being(using philosophical terms)or united in the heart of God (paraphrasing from his Systematic Theology--Tillich doesn't say much about God in this book).

When love, power and justice are separated in a situation, it becomes unstable. "Being" (or God) is the power that drives the situation toward stability--that is, toward a situation where love, power and justice are in balance.

In life, the attempt to achieve this balance is dynamic, ever-changing, shifting--sometimes creating a worsening situation, sometimes one that's improving. A Hitler may gain immense power (divorced from justice) in the short-term. Eventually, forces of resistance emerge to stop him.

(Tillich doesn't try to explain why it takes so long to stop abusive situations or why so many people are hurt in the process: he was a philosopher/theologian, not God himself).

There are times when love, power and justice come together in moments of transcendence. In his Systematic Theology, Tillich says that at times we experience the realm of God in a way that is "preliminary and in anticipation."

Because _Love, Power and Justice_ is based on lectures Tillich gave, it packs an incredible amount of insight into six small chapters. It is one of my all-time favorite books, highly recommended, and worth every penny.

This volume aims to bring together current knowledge of both scientific and clinical aspects of RPN. Recent advances in the immunology, inflammatory mechanisms and pathology of RPGN are discussed. This is followed by consideration of the major causes of RPGN, which include Goodpasture's disease, primary systematic vasculitis and systematic lupus erythematosus. RPGN secondary to other renal and systemic diseases, and RPGN in children are also described. Finally, new approaches to treatment are reviewed. Although certain of these areas are covered in the larger textbooks of renal medicine, our aim is to provide a current overview of RPGN, in a concise volume. This should be of particular interest to nephrologists and general physicians, including those in training, but may also be of value to pathologists, immunologists, and other studying the mechanisms of renal disease. We hope that this volume will help them in the management of patients with RPNG, or in planning their research into this condition.
