The Significance of Religious Experience, by Howard Wettstein

In this volume of essays, Howard Wettstein explores the foundations of religious commitment. His orientation is broadly naturalistic, but not in the mode of reductionism or eliminativism. This collection explores questions of broad religious interest, but does so through a focus on the author's religious tradition, Judaism. Among the issues explored are the nature and role of awe, ritual, doctrine, religious experience; the distinction between belief and faith; problems of evil and suffering with special attention to the Book of Job and to the Akedah, the biblical story of the binding of Isaac; the virtue of forgiveness. One of the book's highlights is its literary (as opposed to philosophical) approach to theology that at the same time makes room for philosophical exploration of religion. Another is Wettstein's rejection of the usual picture that sees religious life as sitting atop a distinctive metaphysical foundation, one that stands in need of epistemological justification.

Must read!
By Isaac Stewart
This book marks an extraordinary event. Just as theists and atheists clash in today's "religion wars," Professor Wettstein's stunning collection explodes the caricatures of both religion and naturalism that ground the popular debate, and reveals the face of religious worship that they have hid for too long. It is a face that may not have appeared in history since before medieval philosophy. In a book whose philosophical depth is rivaled only by its breathtaking poetic sensitivity, Wettstein explodes the wrong turn of linking religion to metaphysical and epistemological theses. Out of the dust comes a richer and more refreshing view of religious worship, no less spiritual and pious - perhaps more so - but in closer touch with the stances and experiences that, unlike doctrinal belief, seem truly central, such as awe, humility and appreciation of novel forms of truth (poetic, for example). The deeply human sides of religious experience emerge, as well, in insightful discussions of forgiveness, for example, and the personal struggles of Biblical heroes like Abraham and Job.

Yet this is not a work of revision. The aspects of religious experience that Wettstein uncovers seem at once more essential and more authentic to the phenomenon as we know it than the familiar metaphysical doctrines. In that sense, among others, the book remains a central work in the philosophy of religion, even as it promises to transform what we mean by the phrase.

Philosophy aside, I expect the book will be of enormous benefit to the day-to-day practitioner of religion, or the person trying to reconcile a weakness for religious questions or sensibilities with the rest of her contemporary outlook. Fortunately for them, it is a beautiful and easy read!

One of the best books I've read in a long, long time.
By David L. O'Hara
This is simply one of the best books I've read in a long, long time. Wettstein doesn't write like a user of words so much as like a man who dwells in narratives. He combines the vision of the classical American naturalists, the philosophical rigor of a seasoned Wittgenstein scholar, and the wisdom of someone who knows Talmud.

Wettstein's central concern is with redirecting the focus of philosophy of religion from thinking about religion as deficient philosophy towards regarding religious experience itself as the proper subject of philosophical inquiry. His title is a nod to William James, as is his naturalistic and humanistic concern with the lived experience of religion, narrative, and liturgy.

I thought I'd skim this book, but wound up reading it several times through. It's beautifully written and philosophically insightful. I'm looking forward to reading it again with my philosophy and theology students.

A Must Read in the Philosophy of Religion
By S. Lebens
Professor Wettstein's book is a really important event in the philosophy of religion.

In the last few years, as a Rabbinical student, I have been exposed to a number of young Jews who have been searching and lost. One great source of tension is that many of these young people have grown up in a community with a language and values that they can't make any sense of. In school, and in wider society, these intelligent students of mine have imbibed the languages of scientism, naturalism and rationalism. And these ways of thinking just don't seem to sit at ease with the apparently supernatural language of Judaism that they absorbed at home. The tension for them is real.

In Wettstein's book, the reader is invited in to Wettstein's own similar struggles, with a collection of essays written over the duration of a decade. Wettstein's philosophical intuitions are naturalistic, his philosophy of religious language, greatly influenced by the late Wittgenstein, and he comes armed with a touching sensitivity to the rhythm and symbolism of religious life and ritual. This book should become the go-to book for reflection upon naturalistic philosophy of religion, and, much more than that, I think it will give a lot of people a lot of comfort too.

The style of the book walks a delicate line between the ordered and systematic reflections of an academic philosopher, and the confessional, personal style of a person of faith.

As an academic philosopher, I commend this book to my peers, and, as a trainee Rabbi, I have already had the opportunity to commend it to the wider religious community.
