The title says it all. It's for young readers (I'm thinking middle school) and every story has a nasty ending.

The title says it all. It's for young readers (I'm thinking middle school) and every story has a nasty ending. The stories start out mediocre and never get better. Maybe my tastes run too strongly towards a more sophisticated story. Maybe the relentless twist endings and stings at the end of the tale make it predictably dull. But most of this collection was lifeless. Maybe I would have liked this in 5th or 6th grade, but not now.

First, most of the stories are pretty dated. Considering the publication date of 1997, I would have expected inclusion of a few more modern pieces. Now I love vintage horror, but with what appears to be only six pieces from the 90's (less than 20% of the total), the collection has a very dated feel.

The Dahl and Campbell stories were well constructed and good openers for the collection, but they were hampered by the frame of the collection letting you know in advance to expect the stinger.

WE'LL LOOK AFTER YOU had a nice creepy Hills Have Eyes / Misery vibe that is accessible for kids.

MR LUPESCU by Anthony Boucher was an unexpected surprise. I was expecting a twist, but not THAT one.

HEY, YOU DOWN THERE! by Harold Rolseth was everything I expected, but good Morlock fun.

THE CATHEDRAL CRYPT by John Wyndham had the best atmosphere and believable protagonists of the entire collection, but was ultimately undone by a rather weak ending.

Outside those six pieces, this was largely a chore. I can't recommend reading this.

Very well chosen group of stories

I enjoyed almost every story in this book---a rarity for a book of short stories. They were all well written, and all had an ending that either you would not have seen coming, or if you did, you still found it a bit of a shock. I loved the story which featured teenagers from different eras in history meeting, and then seeing a young person that looked like he was from prehistoric times---until something tells them otherwise, and the truth is quite a shock! This would be a good collection to upgrade the quality a little of what kids are reading if they are into horror like Goosebumps---stories with some substance but just as gripping---in fact probably much more so.

Beautiful bedtime reading!

The mix of stories in this collection was wonderful. A few old familiar favorites that I was glad to find and a lot of stories I had never read before. Each chilling in it's own way. I rationed them out, only one a night right before bed. I found "Sweet Shop" to be delightful, and had to turn the lamp on in the middle of the night to check under the bed after reading "Such a Sweet Little Girl". This book is definitely worth adding to your collection.

Through the Breaches: U.S. Marines in the Gulf War 25 Years Later

This fine book is a concise history of U.S. Marines in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Although a military history, the author does a good job of "setting the stage" to explain why the United States intervened. All facets of Marine operations are detailed: planning, air, ground, logistics, and seaborne. The work is heavily illustrated including color photographs, works by superb combat artists, maps, and informative comparative charts. Highly recommended for Gulf War veterans who wish to see "the big picture" and a good addition to any collection about the Marine Corps or the Middle East.

So, Abdo asks, what does religion have to do with it? This sectarian conflict is often presented by the West as rivalry over land use, political power, or access to education. However, Abdo persuasively argues that it must be understood as flowing directly from religious difference and the associated identities that this difference has conferred on both Shi'a and Sunni.

The New Sectarianism considers the causes for this conflict in key countries such as Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Bahrain and the development of regional trends. Abdo argues that in these regions religion matters, not only in how it is utilized by extremists, moderate Islamists, and dictators alike for political purposes, but how it perpetually evolves and is perceived and practiced among the vast majority of Muslims. The Dictionary contains concise accounts not only of all the officially recognized popes from St. Peter to John Paul II, but also of all their irregularly elected rivals, the so-called antipopes; it also has an appendix recording the once generally credited but long discarded, tradition that at some date in the ninth, tenth, or eleventh century there was a femal pope called Joan. Each pope and antipope is assigned an entry which covers, except where (as in the early centuries) no information is available, his family and social background and pre-papal career as well as his activities in office, and each entry has its separate select bibliography, usually including references to the primary source for the pope's life and his official acts.
The popes have been deliberately arranged in chronological rather than alphabetical order so that each can be studied in his own historical context. The arrangement also means that the book is in effect a continuous history of the papacy. Based on careful research, but eminently readable, it provides revealing vignettes of the extraordinary variety of men who have claimed to be successors of St. Peter, and their varying involvement on great power politics, personal or family aggrandizement, theological controversy, or spiritual leadership. It also presents a graphic and moving picture of the fluctuating fortunes of the Christian church centered in Rome, sometimes submerged by secular forces, but at other times, under popes of determination and vision, staging a spectacular revival and confronting the world (as today) with a daunting challenge.

Kelly is an Anglican scholar-priest, author of the highly regarded Early Christian Creeds (Longman, 1972. 3rd ed.) and Early Christian Doc trines (Harper, 1978. rev. ed.). The Dictionary is a chronological listing of popes from Peter (d. c.64) to John Paul II. Entries contain concise yet interesting biographies, followed by brief bibliographies of selected pri mary and secondary sources. Anti popes, men who claimed to be pope but, "rightly or wrongly," were not officially recognized, are included, as is an appendix on Pope Joan, a leg endary female pope. The result is the ideal reference book: Well written and thoroughly indexed, it also ex hibits fine scholarship. J.N.D. Kelly is Canon of Chichester Cathedral, a Fellow of the British Academy, and since 1966 a member of the Academic Council of the Ecumenical Theological Institute, Jerusalem. He is the author of Early Christian Creeds, Early Christian Doctrines, The Epistles of Peter and of Jude, and Jerome.

A needed scholarly overview.

The late Church of England clergyman and Oxford scholar JND Kelly has, in his "The Oxford Dictionary of Popes" provided a needed resource accessible to scholars, clergy, and laity alike, and is valuable for both Protestants and Catholics.
The "Dictionary" summarizes the life, important acts and writings, and controversies surrounding the Successors to St. Peter, and the various pretenders to that throne. He doesn't pull any punches -- several of the medieval and Renassiance era popes get the short shrift that they so desperately deserve! But these brief biographies are written without rancor, without agenda, and with good bibliographic references so the reader can identify the primary source material. Furthermore, Kelly seperates fact from fiction, debunking David Yallop's "In God's Name: An Investigation into the Murder of Pope John Paul I" and the various legends surrounding the ficticious "Pope Joan".
All in all, a valuable reference text that belongs on the shelf of every historian, clergyman and theological scholar.

Top Notch Theological Resource

For the serious theologian, be it of the lay or ordained variety, this is a great resource.
Here, chronologically, the renowned historian Kelly provides insightful, concise historical background into the papacy.
One can be assured that his research is spotless, since his early church knowledge and expertise is renown. This is continued here.
Great to have the bibliographical resources for each entry, knowing that Kelly has sorted the possibilities out and provided valuable service in providing primary assets to investigate.
I'll be referring to mine often in historical research. Anyone who delves into this prominent area will want this valuable, economic resource in their library.

A Female Pope?!?

Any book that deals with the topic of Pope Joan, the only female pope, and does not do it with guffaws for comic relief, is a keeper in my library. He also includes a Pope whose four day papacy before his death, never gave him the time to be "sworn in"! Now that is a complete study. Feminism and curiosity aside, though, this is a valuable reference that is also enjoyable reading. My favorite attraction is that for each Pope, Kelly directs you to the best sources for more information on everyone of the Popes he has studied. As interesting groups of people go, it just doesn't get any more interesting than these guys!

"Arming of the Fleet" is a comprehensive review of weapon system development and testing at China Lake California, the original "Secret City" of weapons development during World War II. I enjoyed the linkage between the weapons development and technology transfer to private industry for the benefit of the civilian public. Increased research and development of technology for communication, radar control, and fuels are and will affect the United States technological advancements. I love this as a great documentary review of weapon systems that protect our Freedom. This is a great book by a very talented research author.

What is the best edition?

So what is the best edition of this tremendous work upon which hyperbole could fail?
Dorothy Sayers rendered the work into a stylistically matched slightly archaic version in three volumes through Penguin Classics. These volumes have the advantage of dedication from the author, a Christian with a precision of language and handy illustrations and extensive notes.
I found Mark Musa's versions simpler and less poetic (he refused to imitate the rhythms as Sayers had attempted) and scholars may have their own favourite version.
But for people on the go, who would like it all in one the radio (BBC) recommended the translation by C. H. Sisson with notes by Higgins published under World's Classics which may also feature as Oxford World's Classics around 1993.
This contains practically all the elements a reader will need including figures and illustrations mapping the voyage and notes on the history and context. The translated verses are numbered and readable though they maintain their depth.
The first book in the most exciting but by the time Dante was writing paradiso his views had softened and he admits at least one "heathen" into his paradise clearly indicating that "works" is just as good if not better than "grace & faith" alone.

Inherited disorders of the kidney are becoming important, not only in pediatric nephrological practice, but also in adult nephrology, representing a high proportion of patients with end-stage renal failure. In almost 50% of all children and in 15% of adults accepted for renal replacement therapy, the causative disorders have a hereditary basis. Many of these disorders are apparent at birth but may not cause renal failure until adolescence. Others may not present until adult life. The contribution of these disorders to adult nephrological practice has so far been understated in most of the existing textbooks. This book presents a practical approach to the investigation and management of patients with inherited renal disorders. The book is aimed at both established pediatric and adult nephrologists, as well as nephrologists in training, and will also be of interest to pediatricians, geneticists, and research workers in this field.
