Wilkinson's lively book effectively conveys the complexity of the problems with which the Supreme Court had to wrestle during the years between Brown and Bakke and the difficulties it faced in resolving cases in which legitimate but seemingly irreconcilable ideals competed for acceptance, such as integration and the neighborhood school. Although sometimes critical of the Court -- which, Wilkinson feels, gave inadequate guidance to lower court judges in the years just after Brown; which sometimes ducked issues it should have resolved; and which never accorded housing segregation the weight it should have in deciding blame for racial imbalances in particular school districts -- Wilkinson is generally sympathetic. Unfortunately, at times, Wilkinson vacillates too much and is too reluctant to draw conclusions and provide answers for the questions he poses. Wilkinson relies almost exclusively upon judicial opinions, briefs, and secondary sources, having used neither manuscripts nor interviews in collecting his information. Consequently, he sometimes speculates about matters which Bob Woodward and Scott Armstrong, with their broader research, manage to explain in "The Brethren". "From Brown to Bakke" is far from being the definitive history of the Supreme Court and school integration, but whoever finally writes that book will profit immensely from Wilkinson's perceptive analysis of the subject.
