Excellent Resource

This is an excellent book of some of the better choral classics. I have sung some of them for years (Mozart's Ave verum) but others are not so familiar (Viadiana's Exaultate justi) to some old friends in a different arrangement (Franck's Panis Angelicus in SATB). Difficulty ranges from fairly easy to difficult, with something for everyone. A good collection for any serious classical chorus or church choir.

The Quintessential Standard

If you only ever purchase one volume of sacred choral music, this should be the one. Oxford + Rutter = 54 "Standards" of European choral music in an edition that is well researched, edited and engraved. Some notes from the preface:
The period covered in this volume is from about 1500 up to the twentieth century...
Sacred music from Britain appears in a separate volume.
With only one or two exceptions, only complete, self-standing compositions are included, not extracts from larger works such as masses, cantatas and oratorios.
With few exceptions, pieces wiith orchestra accompaniment (...) appear in the Sacred Choruses volume.
With one exception, choral arrangements of music not original for choir or vocal ensemble are excluded, as is music in less than four voice parts.
Advent, Christmas and Epiphany motets appear in a separate volume and are excluded. (From page iv of the preface)
Now that we've listed what isn't included... well... what IS included is simply fantastic. I can't think of a more useful volume for concert or high-church choirs. The efficiency of purchasing a collection over individual octavos should not be overlooked. The average price of choral octavos these days is about $2.00. With a volume like this, you couldn't even copy (from a legal source, of course) these pieces so cheaply.
This volume makes a lovely gift for choral singers, too.

A MUST for your choral library!

This compilation of choral gems is one of my prized possessions! It has some tried and true classics like the Cantique de Jean Racine (Gabriel Fauré) and some less mainstream but equally gorgeous pieces, like the Salve Regina (Francis Poulenc). There are some historical and performance notes included. To a teacher, a conductor, student: this is a book you will use and use; there is something for everyone!

About the Author

Nile Green is Professor of South Asian and Islamic history at UCLA and chair of the UCLA Program on Central Asia. This book is although written in the most briliant English prose I have read in a while, it lacks in quality of academic, intellectual integrity that is required when writing about the history of a nation as controversial and as contested as Afghanistan. The British narrative that created the artificial Afghan identity is revisited and retold by those whom are well know fascist Pashtuns. Oxford should be ashamed of printing such garbage. 9 months of the government of Habibullah Kalakani is portrayed as a time where Kabul was ravaged. In fact, it Nader Khan who attacked Kabul and with the help of Jaji and Mangal tribes among others, looted, burned and pilaged Kabul and surrounding areas. Nader Khan signed and swore on Quran that he wont harm him, but not only he brutally murdered Habibullah Kalakani, he also ravaged northern Kabul for daring to take over the throne. This book should be labeled as History of Pashtuns, Pashtun Eyes. Because anyone who has academic dignity would get sickened by reading this as a serious history book.

Alexis de Tocqueville once warned that "insufferable despotism" would prevail if America ever acquired a national administrative state. In Tocqueville's Nightmare, Daniel R. Ernst destroys this ahistorical and simplistic narrative. He shows that reformers wanted to purge government of corruption rather than create a socialist utopia. Indeed, they built the principles of individual rights, limited government, and due process into the administrative state.

Far from following "un-American" models, they rejected the leading European scheme for constraining government, the Rechtsstaat (a state of rules). They instead equated the rule of law with the rule of courts and counted on judges to review the bases for administrators' decisions. But when leading judges realized that strict judicial review shifted to them decisions best left to experts, even they decided that a "day in court" was unnecessary if individuals had already had a "day in commission" where the fundamentals of due process prevailed. This procedural notion of the rule of law solved the judges' puzzle of reconciling bureaucracy and freedom.

The American administrative state is a restrained and elegant solution to a thorny problem and has kept Tocqueville's nightmare at bay.

About the Author

Daniel R. Ernst has been a member of the faculty of the Georgetown University Law Center since 1988. His first book, Lawyers against Labor, won the Littleton-Griswold Award of the American Historical Association. He has been a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellow, a Fulbright Research Scholar at the National Library of New Zealand, and a co-editor of "Studies in Legal History" a book series sponsored by the American Society for Legal History. He writes on the political history of American legal institutions.

Moore argues that Buddhist political thought rests on three core premises--that there is no self, that politics is of very limited importance in human life, and that normative beliefs and judgments represent practical advice about how to live a certain way, rather than being obligatory commands about how all persons must act. He compares Buddhist political theory to what he sees as Western analogues--Nietzsche's similar but crucially different theory of the self, Western theories of limited citizenship from Epicurus to John Howard Yoder, and to the Western tradition of immanence theories in ethics. This will be the first comprehensive treatment of Buddhism as political theory.

Moving beyond the rigid bounds of political science, the author engages with sociology, psychology and social psychology, to provide a comprehensive picture of the complex individual motives behind seemingly senseless violence in Sierra Leone's war. Highlighting the inadequacy of current explanations that centre on the anarchic nature of brutality, or conversely, its calculated rationality, this book sheds light on the critical but hitherto neglected role played by the emotions of shame and disgust. Drawing on first-hand accounts of strategies employed by Sierra Leone's rebel commanders, it documents the manner in which rebel recruits were systematically brutalised and came to perform horrifying acts of cruelty as routine. In so doing, it offers fresh insight into the causes of extreme violence that holds relevance beyond Sierra Leone to the atrocities of contemporary civil wars.

Despite originally being published in 1983, this compact book is still a "one of a kind" terrific combination of information for all types of public and private buildings with excellent pictures that highlight every style and type of architecture that the British Raj produced from the 1780s thru the 1930s. The men who conceived and planned this architecture and why /how it was built during the Raj's nearly two centuries in India is told concisely and well.The book is divided into 8 chapters with the two [2] chapters in particular - domestic architecture of the cities and countryside and the wide range of styles of public buildings that displayed the Raj's pomp and power - these chapters are particular well written ,illustrated anf interesting. India after independence did not obliterate these "Stones of the Raj" unlike Communist China's wholesale destruction of any 19th and 20th century architectural reminders of the west's presence and dominance. India doesn't celebrate or venerate these building's but pragmatically continues to utilize many of them from Edwin Lutyens massive Viceroy's palace and other government buildings in New Delhi to racecourses, railroad stations, priivate clubs, hotels, churchs, forts, law courts, bridges, tunnels and museums.- all chronicled in detail by Ms Morris. The fact that the British built their structures "so damm well" has ensured their continued survival and use. Ms. Morris writes in a fluent,easy style that is both informative and entertaining and it is quite a remarkable achievement of chronicling the Raj's architectural and historical monuments. I highly recommend this book for its architectual and historical information and give it a 5 star rating.

Solid work

An interesting, but dense book, which explores Greek literature in eight essays, from Homer to literature created under Roman rule. This is a work for those who already have some background in Greek literature. Some of the essays were easier going than others because a different scholar wrote each essay. I thought the strongest essays were those on Archaic Greek poetry, the development of drama, and the literature of the philosophers. There was an essay on the historians and concentrated on Herodotus and Thucydides which was good but I thought it too brief. The poetry essay went into detail on the three genres of Greek poetry, as well as the context for their performances. Overall, the essays showed the progression from the reception of oral poetry and epic, to the almost exclusive use of writing. I have only three real complaints about the text, and they relate entirely to personal preference. The print was very small, which made for laborious reading. The authors used direct transcription of Greek names, which is becoming the trend, however, that’s not how some of us learned the names in school. I have always found the use of BCE/CE an irritating conceit and nod toward PC. Regardless of how you annotate the periods, the reason for the demarcation is still the same.
