About the Author
The respected English choral conductor, pedagogue, and composer, William Gillies Whittaker (1876-1944) was well-known as a Bach conductor and scholar, and edited various instrumental works of the 17th and 18th centuries. He was editor of the series of Bach's cantatas with English texts by C. Sanford Terry, published by Oxford University Press.

Excellent first step to mastering the art of sight-singing

i have been using this book as a "first step" in sight singing for my students for nearly thirty years, starting from my tenure as co-chairman of the Peabody Preparatory music theory department in Baltimore, MD. Yes, the print is very small, and some of my more visually challenged students have enlarged the pages; however, it is a very intelligent and savvy approach to the art of sight-singing. I highly recommend it. It is, however, the only volume of this series that I use-- employing the entire set would be tiresome and unnecessarily slow. From this volume, I move to the Kraft-Berkowitz "New Approach..." which begins where this book finishes and moves at a doable pace to some very challenging material, including the movable C clefs, far-reaching modulations, and rhythmic complexities.

Itty Bitty

This book is so tiny, you can't see the notes clearly -- I can't anyway, not even with my glasses on. It is NOT a full-sized book of vocal music you put on a stand and read during a voice lesson; it is more like a novelty item than something meant to be used. How are you supposed to sight-sing if you can't see the music properly?
