An artless story about a young Nigerian girl who has to leave Lagos and go back to her mother's family village after her father dies. There she and her young schoolteacher fall in love, but she is kidnapped into marrying someone else, and a scandal arises from the lies she tells her kidnapper about her loss of virginity in order to escape him. Nevertheless her lover rescues her and they live happily until she dies in childbirth, confirming the tradition that a dowryless bride will not survive. Emecheta as in Second-Class Citizen (1975), explicitly fills in her lessons about the clash between modernization and tribal residues in the 1950's. Particular twists crop up when it is a WWII wound that kills the girl's father, and an Esso-built hut that the young couple is so delighted to move into. But the book remains a fairy tale, written with a certain genuine sweetness, offering nothing that would disturb - or especially challenge - an adolescent reader. (Kirkus Reviews)

A funny, romantic, full-of-culture classic!

Nigerian books are not exactly what one would call "popular" with a Western audience, but when books like "The Bride Price" are available, it is very hard to understand why. "the Bride Price" is a touching story of a young girl Akun-na, and her family. After her fathers death Akun-na must fight a sexist society in order to be with her own true love, Chike. The author Emecheta is a sociologist, and this comes out in the novel. Varous parts of Nigerian culture are shown to us poignantly and concisely. The book is written for a Western audience and comes across clearly. It is an excellent read for those wishing to learn about African culture, and should perhaps be on a required book list for highschoolers. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a short, funny, romantic classic

The Bride Price

The "Bride Price" by Buchi Emecheta is an informative insight into the culture, traditions and history of the Nigerian peoples and as a whole, is well served as an introduction to the rich customs and heritages of Africans. I must admit that the ending, while it was not necessarily suprising, was a bit disappointing and seemed to sort of fizzle out. While the over-all theme that I detected, that being the inability of the African people to remove themselves from their cultures, families and religious and secular traditions (not that such is desirable), regardless of lingering influence from Western domination, was in a sense captured by Emecheta's choice of an ending, although I feel it could have perhaps been handeled better, with more of a twist. However, in ultimate value this novel is a easy and enjoyable read, with an, at times captivating story line that is deeply intertwined, once again in the culture and traditions of the African and specifically Nigerian people.

Pater and the Renaissance: Aesthetic Self-Help

This book has changed many lives in a very
peculiar way: although its evaluations are
quite wrong at times, particularly the chapter
on the School of Giorgione(if you care, check

out the edition with an introduction by

Kenneth Clark), Pater's Renaissance still

shines with the very same light that made it a

cult among Victorian youngmen.

The "gemstone flame", the pervasive feelings

of which Pater invited us to share have not
vanished (in spite of the attempts of the
so-called modern art), and the book's
invaluable lesson is that you simply

do not need a fancy objet d'art to see

what true beauty is all about.

So basically this is what I have to say: if

you have ever derived aesthetic pleasure from
anything at all in life, you should read this
little book tomorrow. If you never felt any

such pleasure, you must read The Renaissance

right now, or you'll simply let the good

things pass you by. I mean it.

Pater is sui generis

I repurchased this book because I enjoy Pater's writing style. It will be apparent to those who read and understand this book that "art for art's sake" (never said by Pater) did not sanction the labelling of the kitchen sink as art. His standards are quite exacting.
This edition is limited to the lectures themselves and a short preface and conclusion. The typeface is clear and well spaced. There are no annotations to assist with the occasional foreign phrase.

Impressionism in criticism...travel at your own risk...

This work by Walter Pater, published in 1873, as
a volume of collected (previously published) essays
along with an essay on "Winckelmann", a Preface, and
a Conclusion was [and perhaps still is] an extremely
influential work of aesthetic criticism. The volume
helped shape [influence] the perceptions, the
attitudes, and the approaches of many youthful readers
in the late 1880's and 1890's. It is very interesting
to read, immensely engaging to consider and muse about,
but also offers cautions to the overenthusiastic,
easily influenced [or persuaded] disciple.
This volume consists of an Introduction [by the
editor, Adam Philips], a Preface [by Pater], 9 chapters,
and a Conclusion (in this particular edition
by Oxford Classics there is also a chronology, a
Selective Bibliography, an Appendix titled "Diaphaneite,"
and Explanatory Notes in the back. The chapter titles
(after Pater's Preface) are: Two Early French Stories;
Pico Della Mirandola; Sandro Botticelli; Luca Della
Robbia; The Poetry of Michelangelo; Leonardo da Vinci;
The School of Giorgione, Joachim Du Bellay; Winckelmann;
and Conclusion.

What's the problem here? Well, unfortunately, Pater
is not completely reliable as an objective perceiver
or critic. He tends to be a bit eccentric in his
individualistic perceptions and interpretations of
the art works, but he goes ahead and defends this
approach in a very "modern" sounding fashion --
which seems to include a bit of "situational perceptions,"
subjective impressions of perception and response,
and subjective criticism. Which makes for extremely
engaging [sometimes irritating] reading, but leaves
something to be desired as far as objective and
judicious thoughtfulness and truthfulness. Pater
seems to believe that it is acceptable to "bend"
or even create facts to further his own it-pleases-
me-to-think-that-this-is-or-should-be-so desires.
We know that we are on a slippery critical slope
[though it will sound all too familiar to modern
ears and modern apologetics] when the editor Phillips
informs us: "In Pater's first published writing, his
essay on Coleridge of 1866, he had suggested that --
'Modern thought is distinguished from ancient by its
cultivation of the "relative" spirit in place of the
"absolute" ... To the modern spirit nothing is, or
can be rightly known, except relatively and under
conditions." It doesn't take much time to realize
that such a critical position is going to lead to
an end-position of aesthetic, critical, and moral
relativism ("You can't tell me I'm wrong, because
there is no one set way of seeing, analyzing,
believing, or evaluating."-- the spoiled, indulged child's
self-justification for the validity of its own
ego supremacy and authority against that of any
parental or adult restrictions. Such a position usually
means a lack of any meaningful in-depth self questioning
or objective evaluating of personal motives, and a
welcoming of lack of restraints in the pursuit of
pleasure and non-self discipline. And this, of course,
is the critical negative refrain that often comes
against the decadent followers of Pater's credo.]
The second fall-out effect of Pater's evaluations
and pronouncements is that some of his disciples
[self-styled] went farther than even he was willing
to approve with their hedonism and purposefully
shocking lifestyles and "decadent" behaviors and
aesthetic appetites.
But it came from statements like this, which Pater
may have meant one way, but which their subjective,
individualistic perceptions took another way: "The
aesthetic critic, then, regards all the objects with
which he has to do, all works of art, and the fairer
forms of nature and human life, as powers or forces
producing PLEASURABLE SENSATIONS [caps are mine], each
of a more or less peculiar or unique kind. [We value
them --he says] for the property each has of affecting
one with a special, a unique, impression of pleasure.
Our education becomes complete in proportion as our
SUSCEPTIBILITY to these impressions increases -- in
depth and VARIETY."
Let the perceiver and the critic -- and the
experiencer -- proceed with extreme caution and good
judgment.

These two current overviews of Chinese art take very different approaches. Keeper of the Department of Eastern Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Tregear offers a chronologically organized work that covers its topic in brief survey form, using representative examples of bronzes, painting, laquerware, ceramics, jade, and stone carving. The book is so brief and the sweep is so broad that a reader not already familiar with the general outline of Chinese history and common Chinese terms may have trouble forming a coherent picture, particularly in regard to the earliest centuries covered. Significantly, Tregear leaves out the important find of a cache of figures at Shanxingdui in 1986, which has been of enormous importance in broadening the known range of cultures in ancient China. On the other hand, she provides an excellent section on 20th-century Chinese art, an area neglected by many of the standard histories. Clunas's (history of art, Univ. of Sussex) approach, by contrast, involves a more critical, theoretical inquiry into Western notions of Chinese art. He eschews a chronological arrangement in favor of thematic chapters on art at court, in the tomb, in the temple, in the life of the elite, and in the marketplace. He makes a point of including objects that have been considered masterpieces intermixed with other less well-known works. He is concerned throughout his text with issues of the historical place of art in Chinese society and with how that society evaluated various objects. The finds at Shanxingdui are mentioned, and some attention is paid to 20th-century work, though not as much in Tregear's survey. Both of these titles have merits as overviews of Chinese art and both could be used by students as well as interested lay readers. Currently the best short introduction to art in China

While not the easiest to read, Clunas's book is currently the best short modest-sized introduction to art in China. The title "Art in China" (not "Chinese Art") is intentional, for Clunas is one of the rare Occidental authors on this subject who transcend the limitations of their background and succeed in communicating some of the subtlety and complexity of the subject, so remote from Western tastes, but no less beautiful and profound.
For example, he points out that while Western art has concentrated on painting, calligraphy is the most esteemed art form in China. Furthermore, from its earliest beginnings, Chinese aesthetics has placed little emphasis on illusionism and perspective, even regarding these as juvenile and distracting from artistic self-expression. (In this respect, the Chinese anticipated "modern art theory" by centuries.) The very term "Chinese Art", he maintains, is a Western invention, since the art work in China was, until recently, never divorced from its political, religious or decorative functions. (That is to say, it was not "museum art" isolated from its context and consciously regarded as art.) Because of these characteristics, art in China has been little appreciated in the West.
Clunas's probing book should be read slowly-- and re-read. The illuminating text gives a relatively sophisticated and sympathetic account of art in China, unlike many books, which are simply naive, provincial and as full of trivial dates and abstractions as they are lacking in insight. The representative works, drawn from all periods of Chinese history--including modern times--are superb and well chosen, and the pictures are excellent, considering the book's modest size. I especially enjoy the full-page color reproduction of Guo Xi's masterpiece "Early Spring" which equals, if not surpasses, the finest landscape paintings of the Dutch golden age (of course, not in illusionist technique, but in sheer expressive and evocative power as it unveils a mysterious fantastic landscape reflecting an interior, as much as an exterior, reality).
My only complaint is that there is only one book on "Art in China" in the Oxford History of Art series, while there are at least 30 on Western art in the same series. One book covers Western art for a 25-year span (1920-45), but 5,000 years of high art in China--in painting, jade, ceramics, lacquer, porcelain, calligraphy and sculpture--gets only a single volume! Talk about provincialism! Certainly, this is no fault of Dr. Clunas, whose work seems all the more commendable in the midst of the naive insularity and ethnocentrism with which it has unfortunately been grouped.

An enjoyable introduction to "art" in China

Reading Clunas' book is a refreshing experience forme. It surveys an amazingly broad spectrum of visual representations of Chinese culture, ranging from archaeological findings in ancient tombs to the works of comtemporary artists. And yet Clunas managed to keep the size of the book under control so that you can enjoy finishing it in a couple of days. Thus it serves well as a starting point for anyone who is interested in Chinese art to explore this vast territory. In doing so Clunas represents a common trend in the scholarly field of Chinese study for the last several decades. A big difference from other classical introductory books on Chinese art is that Clunas is more self-conscious and tries harder to avoid measuring Chinese culture completely by a Western ruler. Despite sometimes he offers opinions, which can only be regarded as conjectures because of the lack of solid evidences, about certain cultrual phenomena, he keeps an open-minded attitude and thus encourages reader to form their own theories. Two minor flaws prevent me giving it a 10. One is that it deosn't have a glossray for translation between English and Chinese, which I think is very useful, considering this book may well be very intresting to the students who are learning Chinese. And it fails to provide immediate references where several intriguing open questions are mentioned in the text. This may hamper interested readers to start their own research right away

Good introduction to the arts of China

I like the author's approach to writing an introduction to the arts of China. Instead of trying to touch at least all of the major artists/works from all of the major periods (which in the case of China would mean touching very many things in a very cursory way), the author focuses on the context for which works were produced. Some of them were meant to be "art" from the start, some were not. This offers ample opportunities to examine how some works influenced other later in history. Overall, I think the ideas presented are some of the most gripping I have found in Chinese art history books. The book includes recent discoveries and scholarship and uses Pinyin romanization (two great features - not all recently-published books do).

This book accompanies the book I actually wanted so it will be useful, BUT the item name is the wrong title

Do not buy this unless it is absolutely necesary, it is not what you are looking for, the title of the book for sale is misleading. This is not the book that I was intending to buy. This book accompanies the book I actually wanted so it will be useful, BUT the item name is the wrong title. That is why I am dissappointed with my purchase. This book is a thin paper back that is supposed to follow the actual book, "Writing and Reporting for the Media".

Wonderful goundbreaking work.

Although published years ago, historian Fischer went back to original sources to find the material for this book. Written for laymen and academics both, I found this book to be fascinating and terrific conversation material. Good book for reading clubs. I found nothing since the publication of this book which touches the subject, which tells me that the author's work is definitive. Put me down for five stars plus.

Walton's Violin Sonata was commissioned by Yehudi Menuhin after a chance encounter in Lucerne, Switzerland in September 1947. The work was completed in 1949 and first performed by Menuhin and Louis Kentner that year. This edition is based on the score published in the Walton Edition Chamber Music volume.

About the Author

Sir William Walton was born in Oldham, Lancashire in 1902, the son of a choirmaster and a singing-teacher. He became a chorister at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and then an undergraduate at the University. His first composition to attract attention was a piano quartet written at the age of sixteen. At Oxford he made the acquaintance of the Sitwells who gave him friendship, moral and financial support and in 1922 he collaborated with Edith in devising the entertainment Façade. Less than ten years later, Osbert prepared the text of another masterwork, Belshazzar's Feast. From 1922 to 1927 Walton began to spend an increasing amount of time abroad, notably in Switzerland and Italy. The war years were devoted mainly to writing film and ballet scores and he became established as amongst the greatest composers for the screen.
