Fabulously Written

Quite unlike other non-fiction I've read, not only is this book packed with history and invaluable information but, like excellent fiction, it was impossible put down! Mr. Stannard's writing is exquisite -- he made the historical figures he wrote about truly come alive for me.

I recommend this book to anyone who would enjoy a good read --- be it fiction OR non-fiction.

This book tells how a devout group of Christians lost their way because of disease and other factors beyond their understanding. They resorted to believing in supernatural forces out of their power to control. That belief became so strong that they resorted to extremes like the Salem Witch Trials to rid the communities of satanic evil. Their belief system was so colored that one can see their warped mental images even in their children's grave markers. David E. Stannard has put all these elements together in an informative and interesting book that helps his readers appreciate the difficulties that the Puritans had to become a Godly community for others to emulate.

Enlightening!

Reading this book was enlightening. By reading the diary of ViceroyWavell, you get to look inside his soul. As you read you get multiple impressions like admiration, sympathy, and at times, anger and scorn for the man. But in the end you see him as a human, albeit a failed human, who got caught in the conflict with people and events that did not conform to his own beliefs and expectations and his inability to shape events.

The events in 1940’s leading to Independence have been confusing because I have not found a book that cogently explained the events as they happened. Wavell’s diary is a collection of his own impressions and interpretations and the reader gets a ring side seat to the events. It throws plenty of light on how and why things evolved the way they did. Wavell came of age when Britain was the sole global super power which was in a mission to be “morally responsible to civilize the natives”. Further the 19th century was a racist century when the majority of European intellectuals believed in some form of Social Darwinism. Wavell came to India in 1903 and spent his formative years in the Indian army during the high period of the Raj, the age of Curzon and Kipling. Those early experiences and impressions would rule his mind to his own detriment in the closing years of the Raj. He was a soldier for forty years until Churchill chose him to be the Viceroy, a political assignment. As an army man, Wavell became a believer in the obedience to his commanders to be the highest virtue, to the letter of the commandment with no room for second opinions. These would lead to his failure as the viceroy after the end of the Second World War when the world had changed phenomenally from the one he grew up in.

Churchill had his experience with India as a soldier a decade before Wavell. But Churchill was a politician by nature and he pursued his own goals with a higher priority than that of anyone else’s and had no hesitation to break the rules of his commanders or colleagues. Keeping India under British rule was as important to him as winning the war against Hitler. He found in Wavell an obedient servant who would serve his goals and thus offered him the job of Viceroy. Wavell was either foolish to take the job or he was overestimating his capabilities.

The British in India were more British than the Britons in Britain and more imperialistic than the conservative politicians in London. Wavell was no exception. After becoming the Viceroy, he recognized that the India had transformed beyond belief and keeping India under Britain’s feet was no longer sustainable. But his master, Churchill, had no intention of lifting the foot and Wavell was not the one to defy or challenge his master. With Gandhi and Congress leaders locked up in Jail, Jinnah going around fertilizing the field nurturing the idea of Pakistan and his masters busy fighting the war in Europe, Wavell functioned more like a discouraged bureaucrat than a Viceroy with frequent feel good pep rallies with his Governors and shows of good faith with the members of his Indian Council.

Once the war ended in Europe the pace changed with the shock of Labor coming to power in London. British in India would have preferred to have the war continue rather than be accountable to the parliament under the Labor party. Dogmatically carrying out the trial of INA soldiers showed that Wavell lacked understanding of the new realities and further undermined his authority. The mutinies in the navy and army removed whatever confidence left in the government and it finally sunk in their mind that it was time to close the shop. Like a typical soldier, Wavell expected Prime Minister Attlee to get a motion passed in Parliament to withdraw British forces from India without formally handing over of power. Such withdrawal would have triggered anarchy and civil war in the Indian subcontinent and Attlee took the right decision to dismiss Wavell and bring Mountbatten in to engineer an orderly transfer of power.

Wavell had difficulties dealing with all types of Indians. He could not reconcile to Gandhi; he truly believed that Gandhi was an evil person. He could never trust Hindus, especially the ones with education. He was alarmed at the youthful energy of Nehru. He understood Patel as a practical politician with whom he could do business but still mistrusted him. He had a soft corner for Muslims because of their large number in the army. He was grateful to Jinnah for his support of the war and was tolerant of Jinnah’s antics in the negotiations. This tolerance would create the impasse in forming any kind of unified government to whom the British could peacefully hand over power.

Wavell carries a large part of the blame for the partition of India, the violence following the partition and the unfortunate legacy of a hostile environment that lingers on today in the Indian sub-continent. The real villain of the story was Churchill who chose Wavell to do his calling.

The contributions of a forgotten Viceroy on the road to Indian independence

From October 1943 to March 1947 the penultimate viceroy of India, Lord Wavell, kept a journal detailing one of the most difficult and momentous periods in the history of the British Raj. Penderel Moon later edited and published the journal in 1973 under the title, Wavell: The Viceroy’s Journal, for the purpose of setting straight Wavell’s legacy and showing his forgotten contributions. Wavell, a career soldier who wished for appointment as the Supreme Commander of South-East Asia, accepted the viceroyalty as one would accept a military appointment: with a sense of duty and obligation to serve the best interests of his country. He did not covet the honor. The journal reveals a straightforward and practical man with an honest and moderate opinion of his own abilities. Wavell complained of the unending “spate of paper,” and did not enjoy administration or the public life his position as viceroy required. He suspected that Churchill held ill-feeling towards him, that Attlee distrusted him, and both suspicions made him uneasy. Yet he also considered himself honest and clear-minded and attributed his own shortcomings as viceroy to his soldierly outlook and lack of political polish.

The journal also reveals Wavell’s genuine and far-sighted knowledge of Indian affairs. His ultimate failure to move India towards independence, therefore, should be understood in the context of the many difficulties he faced. In 1943 these difficulties included the war, an acute financial crisis, and most of all a famine in Bengal. Wavell addressed each of these problems with great skill and determination. He also faced the difficult task of satisfying an increasingly weak and vacillating British policy towards India, while trying to find a delicate balance in Indian politics. In contrast to Mountbatten, moreover, Wavell lacked plenipotentiary powers, making his efforts to achieve a solution contingent upon the cooperation of the British government in London. “Our bluff has been called,” he wrote on 30 October, 1946. “Our time in India is limited and our power to control events almost gone… My task now is to secure the safest and most dignified withdrawal possible.” As Moon argues, Wavell’s continual efforts to reach a settlement, from the Simla Conference in the summer of 1945 to the Cabinet Mission one year later, vindicated the good intentions of Wavell and won Indian goodwill. Meanwhile Wavell's "breakdown plan," which the British government refused to commit to, possessed the essential proposals that would later help Mountbatten succeed. Wavell: The Viceroy’s Journal stands as a corrective to the legacy of an underestimated British viceroy, whose honest efforts ultimately foundered upon an unprecedented series of difficulties.

"THE OXFORD BOOK OF CAROLS" IS THE MOST FAMOUS AND THE MOST COMPLETE OF ALL CAROL COLLECTIONS."
It contains 197 carols, most of which are for the Christmas season, but some are for Passiontide or Easter, or for other seasons of the year. All but thirty have traditional carol tunes, mostly with traditional carol texts. The remainder have music by 19th-or 20th-century composers, including such famous carols as Holst's 'In the Bleak Midwinter' and 'Lullay my liking', Cornelius's 'Three Kings from Persian lands afar' and Tchaikovsky's 'The Crown of Roses'(one of my personal favorites).

Percy Dearmer edited the words and Martin Shaw and Ralph Vaughan Williams the music. Vaughan Williams also composed four carols and collected a number of folk carols.

Carols are songs with a religious impulse that are simple, hilarious, popular and modern. But there is considerable variance among them; some are narrative, some dramatic, some personal and a few are secular. The typical carol expresses common emotions of ordinary people in language that can be understood with music that is shared by all. The tunes in this book are real carol tunes set to appropriate harmony, preserving the freshness and buoyancy of the true carol.

There are five parts in this book that I now list for your convenience: PART ONE: Traditional Carols with tunes proper to them; Nos 1-72 English, Welsh and Irish - Nos 73-113 foreign carols with word translations. PART TWO: Traditional carol tunes set to other traditional or old texts nos 114-132. PART THREE: Modern texts written for or adapted to traditional tunes nos 133-167. PART FOUR: Traditional carols set to tunes by modern composers nos 168-185. PART FIVE: Carols by modern writers and composers nos 186-197.

The carols are arranged in the index for use throughout the Church Year either by the first line of the song (Italics) or the title. There is also a separate index with just the titles alphabetically arranged. There is no doubt that many of these carols might not be as familiar to Americans as to the British from whence this book came, and possibly more familiar to Europeans. However, it is a good opportunity for all to pick up on some very attractive tunes that we might learn to enjoy. This really is an exceptional book both musically and historically for the information is extensive, well organized and most informative. The arrangements are in four-part harmony and certainly very singable and playable by the average singer or pianist.

About the Author

Thomas H. Troeger is the Ralph E. and Norma E. Peck Professor of Preaching and Communications at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado, and director of its Doctor of Ministry program in homiletics. Ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1970 and in the Episcopal Church in 1999, he is dually aligned with both traditions. Author of more than a dozen books in the fields of preaching and worship, and a frequent contributor to journals, he is also a poet whose work appears in the hymnals of most denominations. He has led conferences and lectureships in worship and preaching throughout North America and in Holland, Australia, and Japan. Much of his teaching and scholarship has focused on the function of the imagination in the life of faith.

A stunning collection from one of the finest

Troeger is one of the very finest living religious poets. This new collection contains an even wider range and variety (even though the number of poems is fewer) than his excellent first collection (Borrowed Light, OUP). In the preface, Troeger writes: "This collection of hymns and anthems, rooted in Christian conviction is intermixed with poems that do not draw upon faith. I am trying to map the landscape of the heart that still rejoices in God yet lives in a world that is largely oblivious to the spiritual dimension of life." He succeeds in portraying this brilliantly. The juxtapositions of texts are both startling and comforting.
Highly recommend simply for reading pleasure, or for those who might wish to make wider use of the texts/poems contained therein (worship leaders, composers, authors, etc.).

Beautiful Poetry

Several of these poems have been set to music and it is easy to understand why. The poems in this collection are in themselves a call to soar bringing a sense of music to mind as one reads them. The words create a type of musical rhythm and makes one feel the pulse of the words. Very talented composers have taken the poems to another level, expanding on the initial focus of the poet.

The survey data are supplemented by information from the Census of Agriculture taken every five years and check data from various sources. Being estimates, they are subject to revision as more data become available from commercial or government sources. Unless otherwise indicated, the totals for the United States shown in various tables on area, production, numbers, price, value, supplies, and disposition are based on official Department estimates. They exclude States for which no official estimates are compiled.

Farmers, food manufacturers, restaurants, economists, trade exporters, and statistical personnel may be interested in this volume. Additionally students pursuing coursework in Agribusiness degree programs may be interested in this volume for authoritative data to support research papers.

Rivka Weinberg begins with an analysis of the kind of act procreativity is and why we might be justifiably motivated to engage in it. She then proceeds to argue that, by virtue of our ownership and control of the hazardous material that is our gametes, we are parentally responsible for the risks we take with our gametes and for the persons that develop when we engage in activity that allows our gametes to unite with others and develop into persons. Further argument establishes that when done respectfully, and in cases where the child's chances of leading a life of human flourishing are high, procreation may be permissible.

Along the way, Weinberg argues that the non-identity problem is a curiously common mistake. Arguments intending to show that procreation is impermissible because life is bad for people and imposed on them without their consent are shown to have serious flaws. Yet because they leave us with lingering concerns, Weinberg argues that although procreation is permissible under certain conditions, it is not only a welfare risk but also a moral risk.

Still, it is a risk that is often permissible for us to take and impose, given our high level of legitimate interest in procreativity. In order to ascertain when the procreative risk is permissible to impose, contractualist principles are proposed to fairly attend to the interests prospective parents have in procreating and the interests future people have in a life of human flourishing. The principles are assessed on their own merits and in comparison with rival principles. They are then applied to a wide variety of procreative cases.

The "New Atheist" movement of recent years has put the science-versus-religion controversy back on the popular cultural agenda. Anti-religious polemicists are convinced that the application of the new sciences of the mind to religious belief gives them the final weapons in their battle against irrationality and superstition. James W. Jones argues that these claims are demonstrably false. He notes that cognitive science research is religiously neutral; it can be deployed in many different ways in relation to the actual belief in and practice of religion: to undermine it, to simply study it, and to support it. These different approaches, Jones suggests, reflect the background assumptions and viewpoints brought to the interpretation of the data.

The goal of this book is not to defend either a general religious outlook or a particular religious tradition, but to make the case that while there is much to learn from the cognitive scientific study of religion, attempts to use it to "explain" religion are exaggerated and misguided. About the Author

James W. Jones is Distinguished Professor of Religion at Rutgers University. He is the author of fifteen books and numerous professional papers, and the editor of several volumes of collected papers dealing with religion, psychology, and science. He serves on the editorial boards of several publications. He is an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church USA and has maintained a private practice of clinical psychology, specializing in psychophysiology and behavioral medicine.
