Neither a thinker nor a feeler but a Christian

I disagree with some of the easy complaints voiced in other less sympathetic reviews of this book and I welcomed Gardiner's approach to Kierkegaard as being an antidote to the widespread tendency to view this writer as an impish yet melancholy anti-philosopher. Unfortunately Kierkegaard has been reduced through decades of superficially motivated and self-seeking interpretations to the status of a finger-in-your-eye trickster who conducted lifelong guerrilla warfare against institutionalized religion and academic philosophy. And, even though his quarrels with bishops and professors are well-known, in the hands of those who would appropriate Kierkegaard for their own variously anti-intellectual and/or breast-beating approaches to life, these same episodes have been reduced to a historical theatrics, the contrived symbolism of those who habitually confuse defiance with authenticity.

Gardiner lets us in on the simple fact that Kierkegaard does not--even in the light of his own undeniably original genius--stand on his own. And if the Dane chose to write at length about, say, the dizzying prospect of real human freedom or the ineluctable pull of the infinite in our finite persons, then it was because such themes were still very much in the air in those days. For example, people need to be reminded that Hegel's philosophy, far from freezing intellectual or religious life, was an unbelievably stimulating development, and yes, contrary to the popular picture of Kierkegaard as a morbidly introspective but entertaining soul, this most unusual man wrote expressly in reaction to the issues that Hegel had raised and the answers he was providing.

And Gardiner's CONTEXTUALIZING of Kierkegaard is immensely valuable because it helps the reader to see in a clearer and more balanced manner just why it is that this man's writings continue to be so provocative and influential to our own day. If Kierkegaard was at loggerheads with the idealist metaphysics of the professors, it was because he was able to see and willing to confront the implications of that line of thinking vis-a-vis the unavoidable demands of Christian faith. Gardiner is not at all interested in downplaying this aspect of the man or in consigning it to the sidelines as an almost arbitrary detail (some Kierkegaard interpreters do end up treating his faith as a more or less incidental aspect of the man or even as a necessary quirk in his character): rather the author places it front and center because Christian faith--contrary to that modern prejudice which would have us assume the opposite--is more than just a set of personal convictions that must take a backseat to just about anything else.

For those who prefer to view Kierkegaard as some kind of countercultural anti-philosopher (read: modernist hero/individualist freethinker before his time, etc.) Gardiner reminds us that his uniquely challenging assertions had as much to do with his inner Christian convictions as they did with the defiant stands he made against the likes of Kant, Hume or Hegel. And any book which allows the reader to re-think the ideas and the debates in which so original a creation as Kierkegaard's emerged is worth the time and the effort it takes to read, understand, and appreciate how it all happened.

The example of the authentic individual

Gardiner chooses to focus on Kierkegaard's difficulties and dilemnas in his own time. He tells the story of S.K.'s great renunciation of his Regina( The famous follow- up is his years later remark, " Had I had faith I would have married Regina") and speculates briefly on the motives. But there is tremendously more to be said about this including a question about Kierkegaard's real meaning for what he called ' his thorn in the flesh'. One logical but I agree not very pleasant speculation might have to do with S.K.'s sense of his own physical inadequacy given the terrible insults and sufferings he had been subject to because of his dwarfish physiognimy.

Gardiner outlines Kierkegaard's quarrel with the Church and his effort to define an authentic Christianity based on true inwardness. He also mentions the odd and ironic eulogy by Kierkegaard's older brother at his funeral where he on the one hand praises his brother's writing and on the other condemns him for the very crusade against false Christianity that S.K. dedicated himself to.

The description by Gardiner of Kierkegaard's first major work 'Either-Or' is excellent and he gives a deeper sense of the meaning of the ' aesthetic' and ' ethical ' for Kierkegaard. He too gives a good background to the revolt against Hegelianism, and shows how S.K. was not alone in this in his own time.

The great literary originality, the play between philosophy and literature, the invention of , and focusing on new religious categories are all parts of S.K.'s legacy to the world.

This book gives much, but only skims the surface of a thinker who with every reading is deeper and more complex and more ambiguous.

He is nonetheless for many in the world still , the example not only of the individual as authentic Christian, but the individual as authentic individual. .

Great overall introduction

For someone with a liberal arts academic background but a spotty knowledge of philosophy, I thought this was an engaging and informative overview of Kierkegaard's work. The book took pains to explain the historical context of K's work- the influence of Kant and Hegel and various other philosophers who he both imitated and argued against.

I have yet to read a bad book in this series.

Of particular interest are articles about the field of medicine itself, including "Art and Medicine," "Communication Between Doctors and Patients," "Psychiatry," and articles about medicine in various geographical areas. The authors of the entries are primarily from the United Kingdom and are experts in their fields. The Encyclopedia & Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing, & Allied Health (Saunders, 1992) is similar but focuses is on serving students and practitioners, whereas The Oxford Medical Companion has a broader appeal. Don't expect this medical companion to be a list of diseases and their treatments. It can best be described as a combination medical dictionary and encyclopedia covering the social as well as the clinical aspects of medicine. The first edition, published in 1986 as The Oxford Companion to Medicine, appeared in two volumes. This edition is in one, containing more than 8,000 alphabetically arranged entries.

Entries range in length from one-sentence definitions of medical terms to 182 lengthy articles on broad medical and medically related topics. Articles appear on such subjects as Doctors in Literature, Art and Medicine (accompanied by a chart of congenital malformations and genetic disorders depicted in paintings), Medical Education, Medicine and Stamp Collecting, Aerospace Medicine, and Patients, Notable. These articles are signed and include bibliographies of medical literature.

There are also overviews of areas of medical specialty, such as Opthamology and Neurology. These summary articles describe the field, trace its history and development, and give a synopsis of the types of conditions the specialist treats. Several articles describe the practice of medicine in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Line drawings and charts accompany some entries. Nobel prizes for physiology and medicine are given in a useful chart. Appendixes list medical and professional abbreviations.

The British origin of the book is evident in the list of contributors, the British spelling of words, and the focus on British medicine and medical practice. This focus is balanced somewhat by comparisons with the U.S. in many of the articles. The long articles are readable and easily understood by the layperson, but the definitions of medical terms use clinical language that demands specialized knowledge. For example, the definition of Bowman's capsule reads "the glomerular capsule compromising a dilatation of each renal tubule at its commencement surrounding the glomerulus."

Definitions are cross-referenced using see and see also. Asterisks before a word indicate internal cross-references. This placement of the asterisk can be disconcerting to the reader's eye, especially in a five-line definition with five asterisks.

There is much that is of interest here for the browsing reader, students, and medical practitioners, but this work in no way should be viewed as a replacement for standard medical dictionaries and encyclopedias.

Even though this book is years old, the ideas remain fresh and challenging. Questions of pacing in performance (maybe the dreaded longueurs are not necessary), and origins of Wagner's antiSemitism (an interesting twist on the privilege of the cultural outsider).

An easy read, something to discuss at intermission.

About the Author

Mack Wilberg is the Music Director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He was appointed Music Director in March 2008, having served as Associate Music Director since May 1999. He is a former professor of music at Brigham Young University, where he received his bachelors degree; his masters and doctoral degrees are from the University of Southern California. In addition to his conducting responsibilities he is active as apianist, choral clinician, composer, arranger, and guest conductor throughout the United States and abroad. In addition to the many compositions he has written for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, his works have been performed by artists such as Renee Fleming, Frederica von Stade, Bryn Terfel, The Kings Singers, and narrators Walter Cronkite and Claire Bloom. Wilbergs arrangements and compositions are performed and recorded all over the world. With their grandeur, energy, and craftsmanship, they inspire performers and audiences everywhere.

"A Lurking Sense of Unease"

Here is another excellent collection from the "Oxford Twelves" series, this time from the well known anthologist Jack Adrian. Some of the stories in this book, like Conan Doyle's "The Story of the Man with the Watches" are conventional mysteries, but in many of the others the mystery is never fully explained and the reader is left with "a lurking sense of unease." The Victorian settings are cosily familiar and yet disquieting - the fog, hansom cabs, madness and ghosts. Prepare yourself for a real treat as you ponder the unknown in "Paul Vargas: A Mystery," witness a chess rivalry from beyond the grave in "The Horror of the Automaton," or tremble at the terrible secret of "The Yellow Box." As for "The Man with the Ebony Crutches," I would certainly not like to run into him on a dark and stormy night!

A treasury of valuable information on a neglected topic.

John T. McNeill produced a masterpiece book about the nature and influence of Calvinism through the centuries. There was so much information about the topic in the book. He gave a lengthy introduction to the importance of Ulrich Zwingli and the Swiss Reformation. He went over the underrated role of scholars like Bucer, Bullinger, and Oecolampadius in perpetuating the Reformation in Europe. He gave an extended portait of Calvin's life and ministry. McNeill pointed out the strengths and weaknesses of Calvin in a fair and measured manner. He discussed his brilliant writing ability and scholastic excellence. He pointed out that Calvin was strict and austere and could be harsh with heretics. Calvin did press for the execution of Michael Severus. McNeill did not look at Calvin from an anachronistic viewpoint. Many other reformers of the era were brutal with how they treated perceived heretics. He pointed out that in many ways Calvin was a charitable man who tried to foster unity among the reformers to a degree that is rarely noted by antagonistic scholars. The assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of Calvin was a strong point of the book.

McNeill went over the course the Reformation took in Eastern Europe, France, Scotland, Germany, Ireland, and Britain. There was some discussion of the role of Calvinism in America, but the overall tenor of the book emphasized the role of Calvinism in Europe. Calvin was an intellectual titan and even scholars who disagreed with much of his theology were influenced by him in some respects. Most notably, this can be seen in the writings of Hugo Grotius of the Netherlands.

McNeill explains the controversies over the centuries, the synods and doctrinal assemblies, and the ecumenical movements. He correctly points out that a distinction must be made between Calvin and some of the extreme positions of his disciples over the years. McNeill believes that Calvin fostered some positive changes and ones that displayed more democratic impulses than the autocratic absolutist governments of his day.

McNeill believes that many have misinterpreted Calvin's ideas and have fallen into error. For example, he stated that Max Weber's equating wealth with the evidence of a man or woman being in favor with God was actually a perversion of Calvin's teachings. Calvin believed the community had a responsibility to help the less fortunate and that his teachings were not as associated with rugged individualism in a way that some think.

Overall, this was a very informative book. McNeill has nuanced opinions based on factual information. His findings defy some conventional stereotypes. For example, he demonstrated that John Wesley had more in common with Calvin's teachings than people realize. Calvin was so much more than just about predestination. The book was a fair portrayal. The author was a moderate who was critical of the strict dogmatism of some religious sects. He advocated an ecumenical understanding under the aegis of the Christian tradition. Overall, he had a favorable view of Calvin that was not divorced from the time he lived. This was an extremely well-informed book that relied on a host of impressive and authoritative primary and secondary sources. The book was good from a literary standpoint as well. It was an enjoyable read.

Best Introduction to Date

This book has been the standard history of Calvinism since it first came out. McNeill is NOT a calvinist but I don't detect any really biased statements. The narrative is quick and moves from the start of the Swiss reformation through the impact of Calvinism on modern culture. Of course, the last section is the least developed since it was written before the current revival of Calvinism and the rise of Reconstructionism and the "reprint Puritan" phenomenon. Still the best.

Soul searching

An insightful history of Christianity's most misunderstood branch. The most fruitful portion of John T. McNeill's "The History & Character of Calvinism" is its reckoning of contemporary problems. The book's Part IV - "Calvinism and Modern Issues" - should not be missed.
McNeill's 1954 work contains a Calvinist condemnation of South African apartheid that was ahead of its time. The book was published the same year Daniel Malan, a leading architect of apartheid, left the South African premiership. Malan's membership in the Dutch Reform Church ministry is troubling to McNeill and the author wishes to set the religious record straight.
Apartheid, while a personal preference rooted in natural law (people do better with their own kind), is self-defeating as a government policy. To those who would use Jean Calvin's doctrine of the elect to buttress apartheid and other elitist/separatist institutions, McNeill trots out the real Calvin - the great reformer himself said that only G-d knows who the elect are. Thus for man to judge who the elect are and create social mechanisms based on that judgment is anti-G-dly.
McNeill is again soaring to spiritual heights when he laments the fragmentation of Calvinism and the Christian Church generally. The author goes so far as to posit that Calvinist churches may come to reinstitute episcopacy (bishops). I dissent here. Jesus said "with G-d all things are possible" but Calvinist bishops?! Bosh!
But that doesn't mean Calvinists can't be inspired by bishops. The recent popes/bishops of Rome have put their church in the vanguard of the pro-life and economic rethinking movements. Calvinists should join in. That's what McNeill means when he writes about Christian "unity." Cooperation is probably a better term.
McNeill wisely observes that the spirit of Calvinism is more directed at bringing about overall social betterment than promoting components such as economic individualism. When weighing Max Weber's thesis that Protestantism spreads rational habits of mind which then spreads capitalism, don't leave off the scales Calvin's view of justice - "To prove ourselves to be G-d's children let us beware that we lend our helping hand to such as are wrongfully persecuted, and that according to the ability that G-d giveth us do we succor such as are trodden under foot." (p. 425).
Old enemies of Calvinism rise from the dead in McNeill's pages. Well-disguised doctrines such as the Erastianism that forms the outlines of contemporary church/state relations and even manages to fuel strife in the Islamic world are unmasked by our scholarly author. To understand big government as well as the bent of social movements toward government affirmation (and vigilante actions by some of the spurned) it is useful to consider how Erastianism mixed with republicanism and mass democracy. Thomas Hobbes, author of "Leviathan," was a secular Erastian, McNeill notes (p. 354), and his self-fulfilling worldview is thoroughly stamped on our times.
Changes in forms of worship are an interesting area addressed by McNeill. My own view is things such as kneeling and the handshake of peace could be imported from the Roman Church with positive effect. Kneeling during communion would be inappropriate based on Calvin's teachings but kneeling during The Lord's Prayer would bring sorely needed humility. Sign-of-peace handshakes might have prevented the destruction of my native Massachusetts/New England. Had the Irish been greeted with outstretched hands of peace and friendly displays of humility instead of Yankee pride New England might still be thriving today. Instead the Irish were treated as a servant class. Disrespected, they turned to boss politics, crime, social theatrics, and Kennedy worship. With other factors contributing, New England (Boston most notably) went from the cradle of liberty to a graveyard of socialism. Tragedy of tragedies!
The Romanists and others should take from the Congregationalists the meeting house forum. This public voicing of burdens and calls for prayer promotes family feeling within the assembly and would strengthen cooperation across religious boundaries. The long-delayed discussion about breaking down government to a more human size (as advocated by the great diplomat and Calvinist George Kennan) will start in the meeting house format - mark my words.
In this, the 500th year since Calvin's birth, we should utilize McNeill's fine book and point ourselves toward renewal and reunion that is internal and thus the most real. United Church of Christ and the rest of the Congregationalist/Presbyterian/Reform family need not make any organized shows with the leaders of the Orthodox and Roman churches. We should respect what G-d has wrought. In studying Judaism's Holy Torah, we learn that G-d's punishments always contain correctives within them. In analyzing the dispersion of the Jews and the breakup of Christianity we should consider the Tower of Babel. In all three cases scattering was meted out because people were misusing unity by aggrandizing themselves and using lavish public ceremonies as a substitute for faith and good works. God's great gift was a "punishment" of congregationalism marked by different languages and customs. Let us respect that but not fall into the trap of insularity.
Ultimately, McNeill calls us to follow the teaching of Saint Paul - "The real Jew is the person who is a Jew on the inside." Those words are from Romans, the epistle that convinced Calvin to become a Protestant (humorous that a document called "Romans" lead Calvin out of the Roman Church). Calvin, following Paul, teaches us through his "faith alone" exposition that the inside must be properly aligned for spiritual salvation and for human actions to do more good than harm. John McNeill's "History & Character of Calvinism" is a helpful reminder of what present and future generations, with their ever increasing focus on outward appearances and identity politics, can learn from Christianity properly understood.
